Exploring

During the years I lived in Massachusetts, I fell in with a bad crowd and spent much of my free time crawling around abandoned buildings, evading security, and taking photos of sad chairs. These posts and galleries chronicle those expeditions.

Abandoned Hospitals of the Eastern U.S.

Photos taken by me and by several of my UE compatriots. The spoken word audio was all taken from training LPs and cassettes found at the locations pictured. Guitar by Glenn “Glendrix” Pettit.

Hospital 06, July 2012

Our cover blown and our plate number (no doubt) recorded in a log book somewhere, we decided to abort the mission. What’s that expression? Cowardice is the better part of valor? That doesn’t sound right.

Hospital 05, February 2012

If you’re trying to get over a mild flu/cold, you almost certainly should not spend eight hours climbing around an ancient stone building breathing frigid air visibly laden with asbestos, mold and mycobacteria.

“You come with me,” he said, pointing to one of my friends. “You look strong.” Then he pointed at me. “You also come with me. You are the brains of the operation.”

Canada Trip, October 2011

Whenever we recall this vacation in the future, we’ll probably say, “Remember that time we went to Canada and that coked-up nutcase plowed into us and totaled the Prius?”

Industrial Site 01, September 2011

This is the first location which I discovered and explored solo, without the usual hand-holding from my UE mentors. For that reason, I have a special fondness for this place. Plus, it’s beautiful.
